Xbox addict 'dies from blood clot'

The family of a budding computer programmer have launched a campaign to raise awareness about the health risks of playing online computer games after their son died following a marathon session on his Xbox.A post-mortem revealed that 20-year-old Chris Staniforth -- who was offered a place to study Game Design at Leicester University -- was killed by a pulmonary embolism, which can occur if someone sits in the same position for several hours.Deep vein thrombosis normally affects passengers on long-haul flights, but medical experts fear youngsters who spend hours glued to their consoles might also be at risk and have urged them to take regular breaks.Professor Brian Colvin -- an expert on blood-related conditions -- said it was "unhealthy" for youngsters to spend long periods in front of their consoles."There's anxiety about obesity and children not doing anything other than looking at computer screens," he said.David Staniforth has now launched a campaign to warn other parents of the dangers."Games are fun and once you've started playing it's hard to stop."Kids all over the country are playing these games for long periods - they don't realise it could kill them," he said.

Staniforth's distraught father said his son would spend up to 12 hours playing on his Xbox."He got sucked in playing Halo online against people from all over the world."Online computer games are extremely popular as thousands interact in shared science fiction worlds.Reports of gamers collapsing after spending 15 hours in front of video games are fairly common throughout Asia.In 2005, a South Korean gamer died after playing online games for three days without taking a break.Microsoft -- which manufactures the Xbox -- said it "recommend gamers take breaks to exercise as well as make time for other pursuits."

Prosecutor says it has Strauss-Kahn rape complaint.

It had received a criminal complaint accusing Dominique Strauss-Kahn of attempting to rape a young writer eight years ago, the Paris prosecutor's office said Wednesday. The official receipt of the complaint by novelist Tristane Banon says Strauss-Kahn tried to rape her in an empty apartment during an interview for a book project, struggling with her on the floor as he tried to tear off her clothes. His lawyers describe the account as "imaginary" and say they plan to file a complaint accusing Banon of slander.Banon's complaint faces a series of difficult tests in the French justice system and could be dismissed long before reaching trial. Prosecutors must decide first if her allegations would support a charge of attempted rape rather than the less serious crime of sexual aggression, an attack that does not involve an attempt to penetrate the victim.

Chile rally against Mexico.

The Copa America finally caught fire Monday as Chile came from behind to edge Mexico and take command of Group C, where fancied Uruguay were held by Peru.Four draws in five matches, an average of barely a goal per game and sub-zero temperatures had left fans less than impressed and questioning if they would see anything approaching samba-style football from anybody over the coming month, Brazil included.Chile answered the question emphatically enough - though Arturo Vidal's winner against the Mexicans, a towering header from a corner, had a rather Anglo-Saxon, rather than latino, hallmark to it.

Peru hold Uruguay

The Copa America saw its fourth draw in only five games on Monday as Uruguay and Peru parted 1-1 in Group C.Uruguay, having reached the World Cup semifinals last year with Diego Forlan voted player of the tournament, pressed hard in the opening period but they were shocked when Peru took the lead through the constantly dangerous Paolo Guerrero. The Hamburg striker netted in the 23rd minute when he took advantage of some slack defending by the "Charruas," rounded keeper Fernando Muslera and finished off by shooting home. But despite an attacking trident of Luis Suarez, Forlan and Edinson Cavani they were caught on the back foot by Peru's bright start. It was Liverpool's Suarez who put the celeste back on terms in the dying moments of the first half when he slid home a neat low finish after a fine through ball by Nicolas Lodeiro. But Peru, who endured a disastrous World Cup qualifying campaign, stuck to their task and in the second half they could have had further goals at the Estadio Del Bicentenario in San Juan as they thrilled their contingent in the 25,000 crowd who endured the freezing wintry conditions.

Brazil draws with Venezuela in Copa America

Brazil was held to a 0-0 draw by Venezuela in the Copa America on Sunday, making a similar lackluster start as host nation and fellow co-favorite Argentina two days earlier.Venezuela, usually regarded as the weakest team in the South American confederation, packed the midfield in the Group B match to snuff out Brazil's attack. The five-time World Cup winners seldom played like an organized team, relying on the individual talents of stars Neymar, Robinho and Alexandre Pato.Players on both teams wore gloves, trying to fight off the near-freezing temperatures of the Argentine winter.

Argentina drew 1-1 with Bolivia on Friday in the tournament opener. Brazil has defeated Argentina in the last two finals and the two teams are widely expected to meet again in the July 24 final.Just like Argentina, Brazil seldom looked like a real team. Venezuela worked harder than its opponent, keeping Brazil's chances to a minimum and relying on an impressive goalkeeping performance from Renny Vega.

Thaksin party wins landslide Thai election victory

Preliminary results from Sunday's poll showed 44-year-old Yingluck Shinawatra's Pheu Thai party winning the majority it needs to form the next government. If confirmed, the large mandate will likely boost Thailand's stability in the short term and reduce the chance of intervention by the coup-prone military five years after it ousted Yingluck's fugitive brother-in-exile, former premier Thaksin Shinawatra. The victory comes one year after the government crushed protests by Thaksin supporters with a bloody crackdown that culminated some of the worst violence here in 20 years and ended with the capital ablaze in a wave of arson attacks allegedly carried out by fleeing protesters. In a late night victory speech in Bangkok on Sunday, Yingluck said: "I don't like to say that Pheu Thai has won, but I'd rather say the people have given the Pheu Thai party and myself a chance to serve them."
